IMPORTANT CORRECTION: I ENTERED THE TIME OF THE LIGHTNING STRIKE YESTERDAY ERRONEOUSLY. THE STRIKE BEGAN WITH A BANG AT 3:42, NOT AT 2:42 AS I WROTE.
Thunder and a single opening lightning strike that seemed close to our house at 3:42 PM. (I am not sure of the timing. There is a small chance that the time of the lightning strike was 3:42 PM. That can be verified from weather data and the 911 call that brought the fire department.) The storm was directly overhead and southeast of our house. I could not see what was happening to the north and east. The sun came out about 3:42 PM and hail had ended, and soon the rain as well.
6:29 PM. I went for a walk to the mailbox with my dog about 4:30 PM. A helicopter flew over our property heading west, circled, and landed at our driveway. My walk took me to an overlook about 1/4 mile from the county road, Douglas Mountain Drive. There were emergency vehicles blocking the road with flashing red lights. When I approached the county road, a member of the Golden Gate Fire Department told me I needed to move far enough from the action for a helicopter to land and not involve my dog, which I took west on our driveway and leashed. I learned that a neighbor on Douglas Mountain Drive had been struck by lightning, but I learned no more at the time because I had to move away from the action with my dog to ensure that the helicopter, which landed sometime later, would have a clear landing. The lightning strike must have been the opening (and short lived volley that announced the brief hail storm).
10:50 PM. I later learned that the neighbor, who was working on the south side of his property when the lightning struck, was transferred to the hospital on the helicopter, was alert and stable, but his Labrador retriever had been killed by the lightning strike. |
